Sony Bravia TVs with HDCP support by year

Starting from 2013, all Sony TVs have been HDCP compatible. If you own a TV with Full HD resolution or lower, it’s designed to work with HDCP 1.4. Other models support both HDCP 2.2 and the new HDCP 2.3 protocol.

You must have the HDCP protocol to watch new copyrighted videos, but only when streaming from a cable set-top box or a streaming device connected to your Sony TV via HDMI. HDCP isn’t necessary if you’re using an app on your Sony TV.

HDCP version compatibility in Sony Bravia TVs

The HDCP versions are not backward compatible because the protocol is implemented in the HDMI chip, not the operating system. Therefore, a software upgrade is not possible.

The HDCP protocol works when the transmitting device has a lower version than the TV. For example, if your cable set-top box supports HDCP 2.2, it will function with TVs that have HDCP 2.3. However, if your set-top box has HDCP 2.3 and your TV has HDCP 2.2, you won’t be able to watch copyrighted videos. To realize this feature, Sony TVs of recent years of production support both HDCP 2.2 and HDCP 2.3 standards.

List of Sony TVs and supported HDCP standards

So that you don’t have to look in the technical documentation to find out which version of HDCP your Sony TV supports, I have prepared a table where you can find the model of your TV. Sony TVs began supporting the HDCP protocol in 2013.

Does my Sony TV support HDCP?

So, all Sony TVs have supported HDCP since 2013. If you have a TV with Full HD resolution or lower, it supports HDCP 1.4. Any UHD TV supports HDCP 2.2 as well as the new HDCP 2.3 protocol.

Sony Bravia TV HDCP error

The message that the Sony TV does not support HDCP may appear in TVs released before 2015. In older Sony TVs with UHD screen resolution, not all ports support HDCP. There may be only one or two HDCP-enabled ports on the TV. Usually, it’s port 1 or 2. Look at the HDMI port on your TV; it should say HDMI 1 (HDCP 2.2). Also, try connecting the device to other ports on the TV.
